Getting Married at Hudson House in Jersey City, NJ

A Wedding Officiant's Perspective on This Beautiful Waterfront Venue

There are certain wedding venues that leave a lasting impression, no matter how many ceremonies you've officiated. For me, Hudson House in Jersey City, New Jersey is one of them.

I've had the pleasure of officiating several beautiful weddings at Hudson House, and each celebration has been completely different. From elegant indoor ceremonies surrounded by spectacular floral arrangements to outdoor weddings overlooking the Manhattan skyline, this waterfront venue offers couples an extraordinary setting to begin their married lives.

But what makes Hudson House special goes beyond its views. It's the beautiful ceremony spaces, the wonderful staff, the talented wedding professionals who bring each couple's vision to life and the flexibility to create a celebration that feels personal.

As a New Jersey wedding officiant who has worked at Hudson House on multiple occasions, I'd love to share what makes this venue memorable and some things couples should consider when planning their ceremony here.

A Waterfront Wedding Venue with a View

Hudson House enjoys a remarkable waterfront setting in Jersey City, with sweeping views of the Hudson River and New York City skyline.

Whether you're exchanging vows inside or celebrating outdoors, the surrounding scenery provides a beautiful backdrop for wedding photographs and a memorable experience for your guests.

One of the things I appreciate most about this venue is how different each wedding can look and feel. The architecture provides an elegant foundation, but the flowers, décor, lighting and personal choices of each couple give the space its own character.

I've also consistently enjoyed working with the staff at Hudson House. From my perspective as an officiant, having a professional and attentive venue team makes a difference in how smoothly a ceremony comes together.

And on the practical side, I've had positive experiences with parking and have enjoyed the food. Those may not be the most glamorous details of wedding planning, but they're certainly worth considering when choosing a venue.

An Elegant Indoor Wedding: Amanda & Shaq

Amanda and Shaq chose an indoor wedding ceremony, and the setting was beautiful.

The large windows overlooking the New York City skyline created a dramatic backdrop, while their abundant white floral arrangements brought warmth and elegance to the ceremony space.

Their wedding is a wonderful example of how an indoor ceremony can feel grand without losing the personal connection between the couple and their guests.

For me, the most important part of any wedding ceremony is what happens between the two people standing before me. Beautiful surroundings certainly add to the occasion, but it's their story, their promises and the meaning behind the day that make the ceremony unforgettable.

When working with Amanda and Shaq, I wanted their ceremony to reflect who they were as a couple. That meant taking the time to understand their relationship, preparing a ceremony around their story and making sure they felt comfortable throughout the planning process.

Their thoughtful review afterward meant so much to me.

"Your words captured our love story and embodied us as a couple. Our guests were blown away by how everything flowed."
— Amanda & Shaq

An Outdoor Waterfront Wedding: Starr & Nygel

Starr and Nygel envisioned an outdoor ceremony at Hudson House, surrounded by their family and friends with the New York City skyline as their backdrop.

Their wedding took place on November 3. They had hoped for a warm, sunny fall day, and although the sunshine and clear skies arrived, so did a chilly breeze coming off the waterfront.

That's something worth remembering when planning an outdoor wedding in Jersey City. Even on a beautiful day, temperatures and wind along the water can feel quite different from what you might expect.

But the cooler weather certainly didn't take away from their celebration.

Their ceremony was filled with meaningful traditions, personal touches and moments that reflected their relationship and their Christian faith.

Starr and Nygel wanted prayer incorporated into their wedding, along with traditions that were important to them, including jumping the broom and a candle lighting ceremony.

We worked those elements into a ceremony that reflected their values while making room for the people who mattered most.

One particularly meaningful moment involved Starr's grandfather. She wanted him acknowledged during the ceremony, and I was able to incorporate a heartfelt tribute that honored his place in her life.

These are the moments I love most about officiating weddings. They give a ceremony meaning beyond the exchange of vows and allow family members to feel included in something deeply personal.

Starr later shared these words in her review:

"It was clear that Aretha cared deeply about making our
ceremony personal and meaningful." — Starr & Nygel

Their wedding is a beautiful example of what can happen when a stunning venue and a meaningful ceremony come together.

A glimpse into Starr and Nygel’s beautiful Hudson House wedding in Jersey City, NJ, where heartfelt vows, cherished family traditions and meaningful personal touches made their ceremony truly unforgettable.

Indoor or Outdoor: Which Ceremony Setting Is Right for You?

One of Hudson House's greatest advantages is the opportunity to consider different ceremony settings.

If you love the idea of a sophisticated indoor wedding with dramatic windows, beautiful décor and skyline views, Amanda and Shaq's ceremony offers wonderful inspiration.

If your vision includes fresh air, waterfront scenery and an outdoor celebration, Starr and Nygel's wedding shows just how striking that setting can be.

Neither option is necessarily better. It depends on the experience you want to create, the season and the atmosphere you envision for your guests.

For outdoor ceremonies, I always encourage couples to consider the weather realistically. Wind, temperature and guest comfort deserve attention, particularly during spring and fall.

It's also worth discussing indoor alternatives, setup requirements and timing with the venue team before making final decisions.

Whatever setting you choose, the ceremony itself should remain the heart of the celebration.

Beautiful Décor Makes a Difference

Another reason I enjoy weddings at Hudson House is the opportunity to work alongside talented wedding vendors.

I've witnessed some remarkable transformations of the ceremony spaces, particularly through floral design and décor.

From towering arrangements of white flowers to beautifully designed ceremony aisles, the creative work that goes into these weddings can be extraordinary.

And while I certainly appreciate an impressive setting, I also believe that the ceremony should be just as memorable as the surroundings.

The flowers will be admired, the photographs will be treasured and the reception will be celebrated. But the words exchanged during the ceremony are what formally mark the beginning of a marriage.

That's why I encourage couples to give their ceremony the same thoughtful attention they give every other part of their wedding day.

Making Your Wedding Ceremony Truly Personal

A custom wedding ceremony should be more than a beautiful script with two names inserted.

It should reflect the couple's relationship, values, personalities and the people who have helped shape their lives.

Sometimes that means incorporating a meaningful cultural or religious tradition. Other times, it means finding a special way to honor a parent, grandparent or loved one.

I've invited family members to participate in opening prayers, incorporated candle lighting rituals that begin with the mothers and conclude with the couple and created tributes that recognize the important people in a bride or groom's life.

I've also helped couples acknowledge family members who have passed away, recognize loved ones who traveled from other countries and celebrate the traditions that connect their families.

Some of the most emotional moments I've witnessed at weddings have had nothing to do with elaborate décor or grand gestures. They've come from a few heartfelt words spoken at exactly the right moment.

Your ceremony is an opportunity to tell your story in a way that feels genuine to you.

Whether you're planning a traditional wedding, a multicultural celebration or something entirely your own, those personal details can make the experience unforgettable.

Getting Your Marriage License for a Jersey City Wedding

Amid all the excitement of planning a wedding, it's important not to overlook the legal requirements.

In New Jersey, couples generally apply for their marriage license through the municipality where either applicant resides. If neither applicant is a New Jersey resident, the application is generally made in the municipality where the ceremony will take place.

For eligible nonresident couples marrying at Hudson House, that means applying through Jersey City.

New Jersey also generally requires a 72-hour waiting period after the marriage license application is completed, subject to applicable exceptions.

As a wedding officiant and Certified Municipal Registrar, I'm familiar with New Jersey's marriage requirements and the importance of completing the paperwork correctly.

I've also had consistently positive experiences working with the Jersey City Registrar, both in connection with marriage license questions and the processing of completed marriage records.

Having someone who understands the legal process can help couples avoid unnecessary confusion before and after their wedding.

Because requirements and office procedures can change, couples should confirm the current instructions directly with the appropriate municipal registrar.

What I Love Most About Officiating at Hudson House

After officiating weddings for so many years, I can tell you that no two couples are alike, and no two ceremonies should be either.

That's one of the reasons I enjoy returning to Hudson House.

The venue offers an impressive setting, but each couple brings something entirely different to the space.

Amanda and Shaq wanted an elegant indoor ceremony that captured their love story. Starr and Nygel wanted a waterfront celebration filled with faith, family and meaningful traditions.

Both weddings were beautiful. Both were personal. And both reflected the people at the center of the celebration.

For me, that's what a wedding ceremony should accomplish.
